While a coach for several seasons in Santa Cruz he became certified as a referee to help as needed. He then dedicated more time to refereeing and quickly attended youth regionals and nationals. After several promotions he achieved becoming a USSF National & Professional referee in MLS, USL, WUSA, WPS for over a decade. Colin also became a certified USSF instructor, assessor, and assignor. He has been an administrator for state referee associations; CNRA, WCISOA, and NORCAL to contribute toward the development of all referees.
